The prestigious German Junge Ohren Preis 2012 (JOP!) Best Practice – Concert for the best youth musical performances, was assigned to The Musicfactory, a coproduction of Oorkaan and Calefax Reed Quintet!

Jury report Junge Ohren Award, Hamburg, November 16, 2012

Best Practice, Concert: Winner is the Project „Musikfabrik“. (Original: De Muziekfabriek), a production by Oorkaan in cooperation with the Calefax Reed Quintet, Amsterdam

Jessica de Heer (artistic leader Oorkaan), Anneke Hogenstijn (interim manager Calefax) and Annechien Koerselman (stage director) received the JOP! during the award ceremony in the NDR Rolf-Liebermann-Studio in Hamburg. Calefax itself could not attend the ceremony due to tour through the United States.

Over a 100 projects had applied within the theme: appropriate for young ears. In their search for fresh ideas serving a lively music scene, one distinguishes four categories: Concert, Participation, Music and Media, LabOhr. The category concert proved to be one of the most popular. But  The Music Factory has managed to score highly.

The Junge Ohren Award is an initiative of Netzwerk Junge Ohren and has been awarded annually since 2006 in four categories (Best Practice - Konzert, Best Practice - Partizipativ, Musik & Medien and LabOhr) under the motto "Ausgezeichnetes für junge Ohren". The jury nominated this year 15 projects from Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland. It is the first time the prize is awarded to a production of a non-German-speaking country.

The Musicfactory (6+) is a humorous musical performance without words, with a lot of music from Byrd to Debussy and Scarlatti to Prokofiev, played by Calefax. This coproduction of Calefax and Oorkaan was premiered in 2010 and has since toured in the homeland and abroad. The stage direction and script were owned by Annechien Koerselman.

Calefax Reed Quintet has made out of its unique team of reed players a wanted appearance at very different stages in the Netherlands and abroad. The group plays standing and combines its exceptional playing qualities with a smart, versatile programming and casual presentation. Calefax includes Oliver Boekhoorn (oboe), Ivar Berix (clarinet), Raven Hekkema (saxophone), Jelte Althuis (bass clarinet) and Alban Wesly (bassoon).
