Between Heaven and Earth
Premiere January 09, 2025, Theater & Concertzaal Orpheus (NL)
How do we ensure that our lives are useful and valuable? How do we establish that the things we undertake are and remain meaningful? Major existential questions that have occupied mankind for centuries, but to which varying answers have also been given over time. In it's new programme If it's not God, at least Man, the young saxophone quartet Osimun takes the audience on their quest to find out how the relationship with God (or the lack thereof) has changed our Western European way of living together.
Starting from the days when God as Creator and Ruler still provided man with an all-encompassing existence (Maslanka's Recitation Book), the journey continues via the romantic celebration of the earthly and the human (Saxophone Quartet by Glasunov & Fanny Mendelssohn Song without Words) to the elevation of the individual (Sólo el-misterio by Pérez-Villegas). Finally, via the new composition Nocturne by Arjan Linker, we land in the present, in which the deep longing for spirituality is combined with electronic forms of expression.
Now reflecting on the evolution of man, then again breaking through the traditional barrier between stage and audience, the young saxophone quartet Osimun forges an almost spiritual connection with the audience with this theatrical concert If it's not God, at least Man. The Osimun Quartet is a finalist in the 'Dutch Classical Talent' competition.

Because our theme may be somewhat abstract, we decided early on that we would like to collaborate with other art disciplines. With the help of our DCT coach, saxophonist Ties Mellema, we approached stage director Annechien Koerselman. And together with her, we created a multidisciplinary performance, complete with costumes, lighting- and setdesign. The way we move across the stage and our different facial expressions also follow a certain stage direction. So while making music, we actually have to act a little bit, and that is quite a challenge. Moreover, it is also quite exciting that we perform in so many different venues, because each venue has different acoustics and different technical possibilities and limitations. We strive to bring more than just music. Whether or not you like classical music or techno and whether or not you are religious, we hope to reach our listeners with our music, and with a theme that makes you think.
