Premiere January 14, 2021, WDR Rundfunkhaus Cologne (DE)

The witch Elphaba is green, the beast is hairy and has two horns on its head, and Quasimodo guards Notre-Dame as a hunchbacked bell ringer. What these three film and musical characters have in common: they are all outsiders in the society, are hunted with torches and are ridiculed. But they do exist, the Belles, Glindas and Esmeraldas of this world, who rescue the sad characters from their isolation and loneliness and thus write modern fairy tales. This concert program, the WDR Funkhausorchester dedicates to the anti-heroes of the film and musical world - from "Wicked" to "Beauty and the Beast", from "The Hunchback of the Notre Dame" to "Frozen". Happy ending guaranteed!

It turns out to be a good idea that the sound direction of the WDR decided to play in applause after every song - because with the first-class performance of all those involved, it would be a shame if they were suffocated in the silence of the empty hall. In any case, the sound is excellent and the images are always sharp - this makes streaming really fun.
But not only with this last song, but also with the varied overall program, the participants let the sun rise for an hour and a half and so at least briefly kidnapped the audience from the paralyzing state of the corona pandemic. A welcome balm for the soul.
